Normally I flush my tanks and never leave the sewer hose attached. But after installing the washing machine, I read a post that the grey tank should be open while doing laundry.
So I did that and for the first time got flies in my tanks. Even though the black tank was closed, flies got in the black system after leaving sewer hose attached for 1 day.
        My questions:
Do you do laundry with the tanks closed? Someone said it’s too much water pressure for the tank, but that doesn’t make sense to me. Is there any risk besides shower flooding?
After tank rinsing, what’s the best way to make sure flies are gone for good?
Is there an in-line trap to prevent flies and odors from coming up the sewer line?
        Thanks, Joe

I do laundry frequently with no sewer hook up and have not had a problem. I always assumed that advice was to prevent a washer from trying to empty into a tank that was potentially full already causing problems. Similarly the holding tank flush says not to run water into it without both black and grey tank valves open. I again assume this is to prevent trying to run water into a full tank. For instance some times when dumping, after the tanks have emptied, I have closed the valves for a couple minutes to allow water to fill a bit, then opening the valves again to create a rush of water in hopes of a more thorough flush. If anyone else has some insight to explain why this is a bad idea, I’m open to listening. So far it appears that everything continues to work fine. I am no expert but just sharing my personal experience, which has seemed to be problem free.

Water does not always back up into the shower. Sometimes, the tank deforms and tears away from the vent, resulting in water gushing into the belly and making an expensive mess. How do I know? Because it happened to me. Since that incident I always leave the grey drains open, except if planning to dump the black tank the following day. One day of grey water collecting (or one laundry load) is enough to clean out the hose.

I think that could happen anytime the tank is full. Is doing laundry specifically a problem for the grey tank?
@Stax – yes that’s normal procedure for flushing the tank.

I always turn on black water flush and close the gray water valve while dumping the black tank. I also close the black tank valve a few minutes to allow a little water to then help flush the black tank one more time. I have always have the gray water valve open when we do laundry. Just my way.

My wife washes clothes almost daily and uses the dishwasher daily. We leave the Grey tank open all the time. If the flies came in through the drain tube for the washer, seal it. It will prevent odor also.

I’ve gone back and forth about leaving the gray valve open. Now, it is usually closed. I drain it fairly often to make sure it doesn’t overfill.

When I leave it open, I put a dip in the hose to act as a p trap. That prevents flies and odors from coming up.

Flies came in from the sewer at a park. It’s a very common problem which I never knew about until now. They got in through the hose because I left it attached for draining on laundry day. Or maybe just one came in and laid a few eggs.
In any case, the solution was cleaning with the extra strength happy camper tank cleaner. There were only a few flies, and hopefully that washed any eggs out.
In the future I won’t leave the hose attached, or will make a trap.
