We’re going to permanently set up our fiver in a park in Arizona, we’ve rented the spot for two year. What is the best way to keep the gray and black water tanks clean? In the past when we’ve move from one spot to another we would add some water and let it slosh around as we travel. Plan to keep the tanks closed until they are full and use lots of water, but any other suggestions?

        Anything else we should consider?

I think that your plan will work. That’s what we do.

I put a third valve at the end of the sewer connection before the sewer hose. (Valterra Twist-On Waste Valve, Walmart, Camping World, etc.) When I’m finished emptying the black tank, I close the third valve, leaving the black valve open. Then I open the gray valve. You can hear the water rushing from the gray tank into the black tank. Once the tanks are equalized, I close the gray valve and reopen the third valve until the black tank is empty again. I repeat this three or four times. Finally, when I feel the black tank is sufficiently cleaned out, I close the black valve and empty the gray tank. You would be surprised how much more black water you can get out by doing this. The third valve also provides secondary protection in case the regular gray or black valve has a leak. This way, when you take the cap off, a possible leak is held back by this valve. The unit locks on just like a regular sewer drain hose fitting.

A small amount of Rid-X after each black tank dump will help in breaking down tissue.

No paper products, use a waste basket.

I have been stationary for about 2 months and use somewhat the same method as Runtrails. I just don’t have the 3rd valve. I empty the black tank and use the gray water tank to “back-flush” the black tank. With the black tank valve open I will momentarily open the gray valve and then shut it before any black can flow back into the grey tank. I do this about 4 times and by the time the last of the water is let out of the black tank all the water is the same color. I agree with you Jim, it is surprising how much sewage is left after just opening the black valve. And, oh, by the way, my tank flusher is running during this entire process.

My “momentarily open” of the gray tank, after the black is empty, is a full 10-15 seconds before closing the gray, allowing the black to fully drain. If gray is full, I can do this twice, emptying the black completely each time, and still have enough gray to backfill and hold in the black a full 5 seconds of gray water. I then close both valves and let the line empty completely. This leaves another 20+ seconds of gray draining to clean the line. Lots of water keeps everything mushy. If in colder weather you might want to add an electric heating pad to the base of the tank and/or the drain valve areas. These can be large or small glue- on pads.
