- I’ve been hooking my break-a-way cable to my hitch and have been looking for a better way. My Ford has a hole over the wheel well. I bought a boat plug used to drain the water out of a boat. Tighten it down as tight as I could seem to work great.Posted: 10:31 PM – Oct 25, 2013I have always run the loop along the hitch disconnect pull rod. Solid connection and can’t go anywhere.Posted: 10:12 AM – Oct 26, 2013Jpcovert1 wrote:I have always run the loop along the hitch disconnect pull rod. Solid connection and can’t go anywhere.

Posted: 1:51 PM – Oct 26, 2013I replaced the long break away cable, with a red one that coils up, yet expands to about 6 feet. When retracted it is about a foot long and does not get in the way. I hook it to the locking pin on our Hijacker hitch.Posted: 7:30 PM – Oct 26, 2013lillyputz wrote:Jpcovert1 wrote:I have always run the loop along the hitch disconnect pull rod. Posted: 11:39 AM – Oct 29, 2013At the beginning of this youtube see how the hitch is pulled out of the bed of the truck.Posted: 1:07 AM – Oct 30, 2013That video shows why I attach the breakaway cable to a hook in the truck bed ,not the hitch itself.Posted: 7:33 AM – Oct 30, 2013Do we really think the break away cable is going to have any positive effect if you lose your trailer?Posted: 8:50 AM – Oct 30, 2013I first saw the video a few months ago. My only questions after watching it were “What was the hitch rating and how was it installed?” I doubt that having the brakes engaged would have saved the day.Posted: 2:52 AM – Oct 31, 2013X2Early in the video, it sure looks like an under bed “puck system” beneath conventional rails that the hitch attaches to. We never see the tow vehicle, but I suspect “too fast for road conditions” and that both overturned, and the hitch popped after the roll. Maybe the tv was still attached and cutting the hitch mount there was the easiest way to separate the tv.
