The tires are less than 2 years old. Probably about 10k-15k miles. The other three still have 15/32 of tread left, they don’t look at all worn.

The easiest way to look for tread separation is to raise the tire off the ground and spin it by hand. Look for any out of round or bulge areas on the tread. The separation starts at one area of the tread and then progresses around the tire until it finally let go. When I was lubing my shackles last month, I noticed an odd looking area on that tire tread, but unfortunately, I forgot about it and did not examine further. 300 miles later, it let go. 

This is a G114 H rated tire. The Goodyear dealer seemed to imply they had regular issues with these tires. 

There was no sign of damage to the core tire that was left and it still held air. This appears to be a defect in the tire. My other three are in great shape. I’ll report back on Goodyear’s response on Monday.

$600 later I have a new G114. Fortunately, my 7 years old, unused, G614 spare worked fine. It needed air and I was able to use my rig inverter to power my air compressor and bring it up to 110 psi. Changing the tire, on the shoulder of I-15 near Mesquite, Nv, was not a lot of fun.

UPDATE:

Goodyear is reimbursing the full cost of the new tire and of repairs to the rig. Once I got to the right person, she was very cooperative and prompt.
